On Monday, October 16th, the Halifax Regional Police officially swore in a new Police Horse along with 2 Police Service Dogs.

Police Horse Jewelz is an 8-year-old Percheron Thoroughbred gelding. He is a gentle horse and not only loves greeting the people in the city, but also fancies himself as a “great” traffic conductor. Jewelz is named after six of the HRP’s fallen officers, and currently is the only Police Horse serving with the force.

Police Dog Cain is a 13-months-old good boy. He was born in Slovakia and made the big-dog trip to Halifax in April of 2023, eager to take on the new city and new views. Cain completed a challenging course of general service dog training and worked his first shift on September 20th, 2023, with his handler, Cst. Joey Malcolm.

Police Dog Kron is 3-years-old and loves life – he completed his general service dog training during the Winter of 2022 and began serving the community with his handler, Cst. Andrew Joudrey, back in April 2022.

Both Kron and Cain are trained in tracking, obedience, evidence searching, building searching and criminal apprehension.

Police Service Dog Casey was also born in Slovakia on May 10th, 2014. In September 2015 she made the cross-globe trip to Halifax where she was paired with her handler, Cst. Joey Malcolm.

Casey is sort of a “police dog legend” around the city, as she has had her paw in MANY cases including locating numerous missing persons and finding crucial pieces of evidence in investigations. Her biggest feat came after an HRP Officer was attacked and stabbed – Casey jumped into action, tracking down the suspect and apprehended them.

Casey officially retired from the HRP K-9’s unit this week and will now enjoy her days at home with Cst. Malcolm as a family pet.
