The Government of Canada announced today that on Saturday, September 2nd, the Government will commemorate Operation Persistence.

Operation Persistence is the name of the military response to the Swissair Flight 111 tragedy. A series of events will take place this weekend that includes Veterans, former RCMP officers, first responders and family members of those lost in the tragedy.

On the 2nd of September, at the Bayswater Swissair Flight 111 Memorial at 4100 NS Highway 329, Minister of Veteran Affairs Canada Ginette Petitpas Taylor and delegation will participate in a candlelight tribute to honour the 229 passengers and crew. This will begin at 10PM with parking available at the Bayswater Beach Provincial Park, 450 metres north of the memorial.

On Sunday, September 3rd, Minister Petitpas Taylor will lead the delegation in a commemorative ceremony at the Peggy’s Cove Swissair Memorial in Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia located at 8250 NS Highway 333 at 10 AM. Parking will be available at the Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse Visitors Centre with a shuttle to transport people to the event.

Swissair Flight 111 was a commercial passenger plane that crashed 8 kilometres off the coast of Peggy’s Cove on September 2nd, 1998 after an electrical and instrumental failure due to fire on-board. All 229 passenger and crew passed away in the crash.
