MacKay Bridge closure set for May 23 weekend

Extended Ramp Closures Also Announced

Halifax Harbour Bridges is advising the public of a full closure of the A. Murray MacKay Bridge beginning Friday, May 23 at 8:00 PM until Monday, May 26 at 5:30 AM, for lane reconfiguration, cable inspections, and a lighting project at the Victoria Road interchange.

Motorist can expect a new alignment through the middle of the former toll plaza area when the bridge reopens Monday. The speed limit will be 50 km/h while the site remains a construction zone.

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will remain open throughout this time, as usual.

The closure includes all ramps at the Victoria Road Interchange, but Victoria Road to Windmill Road will remain open

In addition to the full weekend closure, changes to ramp access will also impact commuters:

  • Princess Margaret Off-Ramp (Halifax to Dartmouth) will be closed starting Monday, May 26 for approximately six weeks for the construction of a ramp to the new roadway alignment. This is a new closure and will alter the current traffic flow.
  • Princess Margaret On-Ramp (Dartmouth to Halifax) will remain closed for an additional six weeks while a new ramp is built to accommodate the safe merger of vehicles to the new alignment. We thank the public for their patience as the timeline to reopen the on-ramp is extended.

Please note that the closure will begin at 8:00 PM on Friday. This is one hour later than the usual 7:00 PM start to allow evening traffic volumes to decline before work begins.

Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes during these closures and to expect increased travel time. Traffic delays are anticipated.

Drivers of vehicles weighing more than 3,200 kg should note that weight restrictions on the Macdonald Bridge remain in place. Except for passenger buses, commercial vehicles are not permitted on the Macdonald Bridge. Increased Bridge Patrols will be enforcing all traffic rules.

We appreciate your understanding as we complete this important work to maintain the safety and reliability of the MacKay Bridge.
