A recent study from Narrative Research says that the “Buy Canadian” movement continues to hold strong as the trade war with the United States rolls on.
68% of people try to support Canadian while shopping according to the study, which is a growing trend since February of this year. Furthermore, a total of 56% of people are checking the label to make sure their money isn’t going to a product of the USA, even if not Canadian.
These numbers are compared against February statistics, which shows a growing trend with Canadians diverting their spending power away from American companies and products.
The trend isn’t exclusive to just grocery stores; 2 in 10 people are choosing Canadian entertainment, the same amount have cancelled a planned trip to the States, while one in ten people have cancelled a streaming service with an American company. Only 19% of Canadians have not done any of the above methods to contribute to the ‘Buy Canadian’ movement.
Canadians were also asked how easy it is to find and identify Canadian products, to which over half said it was easy, a quarter having some difficult and roughly 20% remaining neutral.
“Canadians feel strongly about supporting our country’s products, and manufacturers are clearly heeding the call, by helping shoppers to identify products from Canada,” Narrative Research CEO Margaret Brigley says. “Though given how strong the desire is to buy Canadian, there is still room to help consumers to more easily identify Canadian products.”
