Halifax Harbour Bridges are advising residents that the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be closed on specific nights to accommodate construction workers as they work on the scaffolding for the bridges’ overhead platforms.

This is part of Project LifeSpan, a project aimed at stripping both towers of the Macdonald Bridge bare of paint, which has built-up over the last 70 years. The two-year contract is worth around $70 million, with 90% of supplies being purchased directly in the province, with Nova Scotia joint venture company Liberty Blastech JV selected for the project.

Workers will first work on the Dartmouth Tower, with these newly announced closures allowing workers to build their scaffolding to then begin work on stripping and inspecting the bridge. The Dartmouth Tower is expected to be completed later this year, while the Halifax Tower is set to be completed in 2026.

“This work is critical to maintaining reliability for the next generation of users. Work not he 90-metre towers and the associated steel sections will ensure they are equally robust for decades to come.” said Halifax Harbour Bridges CEO Tony Wright.

During these closures, HHB says the MacKay Bridge will remain open.

“Halifax Harbour Bridges appreciates these closures may cause inconvenience, and steps were taken to minimize disruptions. We are grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding.” says Project Manager Walter Watkins.
