The Emera Oval, the largest outdoor artificially refrigerated ice service east of Quebec City, opened for the 2025/2026 winter season on Monday, December 15th, 2025.
The Oval, which was originally named the Canada Games Oval, first opened in 2010 to the public for skating before its use in the Canadian Masters Championships and the 2011 Canada Games. The Oval was set to be removed in March of 2011 but was made permanent after overwhelming public demand.
Now more than 13 years later, the Emera Oval has become a staple in Halifax. Several events are planned to kick off the 2025/2026 season, with a Skate with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1:00 p.m. and an evening family skate on Wednesday, Dec. 31, from 10:00 p.m. to midnight. The Oval will also be hosting Sensory Skates every Monday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. starting on Monday, January 5th, 2026. These skates will have no music, no large groups, and more.
The Emera Oval provides free public skates and free equipment rental when a valid piece of ID is shown. In addition, the oval offers public washrooms, first aid, accessible washrooms and parking, and much more.
