The annual Geminid Meteor shower began on December 4th, but the peak time for viewing is just around the corner.
According to the International Meteor Organization, the night of Saturday, December 13th into the morning of Sunday, December 14th will be the best time to see the meteors. The maximum peak of the Geminids could result in up to 120 meteors per hour around 4:00am Atlantic (1:00am Mountain, 12:00am Western) in the early morning hours of December 14th.
The Geminids are considered by some astronomers as the best of the best, resulting in bright and colourful fireballs that burn up in the atmosphere, some travelling as fast as 193 kilometres per second. Although up to a whimsical 120 meteors per hour can be seen under proper conditions, NASA states that wasn't always the case. The shower first started in the mid-1800s with around 10-20 meteors per hour. Now, it rules the sky and year as one of the best shows to witness.
The best way to catch the show will be to travel out of town to a dark area, free of any light pollution and a clear sky. With the early days it's a great time to catch the asteroids, with a suggested start time of around 7:00pm. The moon is set to be a crescent moon and shouldn't interfere too much with the meteors. For Eastern Passage, at the time of writing, Environment Canada states it will be cloudy Saturday and Sunday night, but don't worry. The show continues until at least Wednesday, December 17th, 2025.
