Seaside FM News, February 20th, 2025

Ruby Dhalla, one of five candidates to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada as well as Prime Minister made an announcement today on Seaside FM. Previously, Dhalla has said she would scrap the carbon tax. Today, she announced her Government, if she were to win, would also withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord.

“As Prime Minister, I would ensure that I put Canada’s interests first, we must ensure that we start investing in our country for our citizens, and I would have Canada withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord to ensure that we put a stop to all of these costly foreign commitments that are doing very little for Canadians” said Dhalla.

Dhalla said billions have been funnelled into international projects, and that climate policies are “burdening” Canadian families.

The Paris Climate Accord was signed in 2016 between 196 parties worldwide, and is an international treaty that included an agreement for parties to reduce global emissions by 45% as well as phase out coal and adapt to newer, greener methods, and other goals related to climate change. In January 2025, the United States of America announced their withdrawal, the second time in the past five years.

Dhalla says natural resources within the country and expanding industries will help Canadians and businesses.

“I think that we need to take a look at our natural resources to ensure that we actually start investing into our country.”

She says building LNG terminals and pipelines would be an investment to have goods flowing more easily throughout the country, saying it is currently easier for businesses to move “North-to-South” to the USA rather than “East-to-West” across Canada.

Dhalla also spoke about tariffs from the USA, and said she would make sure that no foreign leader would “hijack” Canada’s economy.

“We have found that it is important to ensure that we start building a robust economy. We can no longer as a nation afford to put all of our eggs into one basket.”
